Children are encouraged to give objects a place by handling them and moving their position. We encourage them to order objects by size, shape, colour, etc. We encourage them to create patterns and to re-create a given pattern whether that be by using bricks, lacing, paper or crayon. They will be encouraged to recognise numbers, including zero; scripting numbers in sand, with chalk and crayon patterns, will lead to the formation of the written number. They will learn how to begin to show awareness and use of vocabulary involved in addition and subtraction.

Understanding the World

Children are encouraged to carry out simple observations, like what they see on their way to Nursery. They are asked to discuss where they live, their families, how they have grown and changed. They are taken on visits to explore different environments. The children at Kiddi-Winks begin to learn about and understand; other people, their environment and how it works within the natural and manmade environment. They are given a foundation for historical, geographical, scientific and technological learning.

Physical Development

The children have dance and gymnastics sessions involving rolling, twisting, jumping, balancing and climbing. They have daily outdoor play sessions and they are given the opportunity to develop physical control, mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills, through the use of indoor and outdoor environments. Through these opportunities they learn to move confidently and imaginatively.

Expressive Arts and Design

The children are able to choose from a variety of creative media like play dough, crayons, paints, model making with the use of glue and "bits and pieces" are regularly available. The home corner area and other structured areas such as a shop, a travel agent and dressing up areas are created on a regular basis. The children explore sound and colour, texture, shape, form and space in two and three dimensions. They respond in a variety of ways to what they see, hear, smell, touch and feel through art, music, dance, stories and role play, showing an increasing ability to use their imagination.
